Lanao Norte seaweed farmers receive assistance
Tubod, Lanao del Norte – 131 seaweed farmers from barangays Pigcarangan and Tanguegueron, in the capital town of Tubod, this province received 60 kilos of seaweeds planting materials last March 17, 2011.
The distribution was initiated by the Provincial Agriculturist Office and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 10.
The government assistance was the result of 1st District Rep. Imelda Quibranza-Dimaporo’s appeal to Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala for immediate assistance to the seaweed farmers of Lanao del Norte.
Earlier in the year, the coastal towns of Tubod, Baroy and Lala suffered heavy flooding after torrential rains pounded the province.
“We would have wanted to deliver these planting materials earlier but we have to make sure that these will not be destroyed by another poor weather“, explained BFAR Asst. Regional Director Asuncion Maputol.
Under the BFAR rehabilitation program, the seaweed farmers will be supplied with the necessary materials to rebuild their farms that were destroyed by the flood.
“I am very much thankful to Secretary Alcala for prioritizing Lanao del Norte’s affected farmers and for acting immediately on my request”, Rep. Imelda Dimaporo expressed.
70 farmers from Brgy. Pigcarangan and 61 seaweed growers from Brgy. Tanguegueron are the latest beneficiaries of the on-going rehabilitation program. VNL/PIO-LDN
