Local polls in Lanao del Norte generally peaceful – PNP, AFP
Tubod, Lanao del Norte – The recent synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections here in the province of Lanao del Norte had been generally peaceful, military and police authorities reported.
Although there were reported incidents of scuffles among emotional supporters of local candidates, the province again recorded another casualty-free election.
“This is the most peaceful local election as far as anyone can remember. We have successfully recorded another zero-casualty election here”, Governor Khalid Dimaporo declared.
Despite postponements in 7 barangays from the municipalities of Munai, Poona Piagapo and Sapad, Comelec was still able to push through with the elections after mediation by provincial and municipal officials.
“We are thankful to the candidates for abiding by the peace covenant that they signed before the election”, PNP Provincial Director Orlando Benas expressed.
601st Brigade Commander, Col. Leo Cresente Ferrer also voiced his satisfaction on how the elections were conducted here in Lanao del Norte.
Town mayors in the coastal and interior municipalities also proved instrumental in convincing candidates to remain calm and not to resort to violence during elections. VNL/PIO-LDN
