PNP Provincial Director Orlando Beñas receives the 6 sirens turned-over by Governor Khalid Dimaporo in support of the anti-wang-wang campaign of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino.Tubod, Lanao del Norte  – Heeding the call of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino against the improper use of sirens or “wang-wang”, Governor Khalid Dimaporo personally turned over six sirens belonging to the provincial LGU to PNP Provincial Director Orlando Beñas.

“The President himself has set a very good example. As public officials it is best that we should lead by example so motorists will also obey the traffic laws and regulations,” Dimaporo said.

In the decree issued by the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos which regulated the use of sirens, bells, whistles, horns and other similar devices, “The gadgets or devices mentioned above may be attached to and use only on motor vehicles designated for official use by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, National Bureau of Investigation, Land Transportation Commission, Police Departments, Fire Departments, and hospital ambulances," a portion of the law said.

For government officials, only the following are entitled by law to use vehicles with these devices: President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Supreme Court Chief Justice.

“We welcome this gesture by the provincial government, the sirens that have been turned over to us will be of great use to our local law enforcers especially the Bantay Dagat in our coastal municipalities”, Beñas told reporters.

Sirens are vital devices to signal the passing through of police vehicles which may be in pursuit of criminals or are en route to a crime scene, or of firetrucks responding to a fire alarm, or of an ambulance speeding its way to a hospital. They are necessary especially for these and other emergency or some other important reason.

The drive against the improper use of sirens and blinkers have steadily gained momentum after President Aquino himself refuse to use these devices in his own convoy and ordered authorities to go after public officials and private motorists who illegally used them. VNL/PIO-LDN
